Abuja, Nigeria – NOI/Gallup Polls announced today the launch of its annual survey of well being in the Niger Delta.

…Survey aims at providing detailed socioeconomic assessment of wellbeing in the Niger Delta.

Abuja, Nigeria – 12 September 2008 – NOI/Gallup Polls announced today the launch of its annual survey of wellbeing in the Niger Delta. The poll, called the Niger Delta Survey, is to be conducted annually and will involve about 1000 respondents from the Niger Delta region. The first survey is scheduled for October 2008 will serve as a baseline. The results of the first survey are expected by the end of the year.

Announcing the launch of the survey, the CEO of NOI Polls, Mr. Ndubisi Anyanwu noted that, ‘the Federal Governnment’s recent announcement of the establishment of a Ministry for the Niger Delta points to the importance of focusing attention on understanding the challenges of the region. NOI Polls will contribute to a better understanding of the Niger Delta region by conducting an annual survey which voices the opinions and aspirations of residents of the Niger Delta on various social and economic issues.’

The Niger Delta region remains an important component of the country’s economy. However, poor infrastructure, a dearth of economic activity in the non-oil sector and issues of governance and corruption have fueled violence and social unrest in the region. The economic and human costs of unrest in the Delta region have been large.

Dr. Bob Tortora, Chief Methodologist of GALLUP Polls, also observed that, ‘in order to support constructive dialogue and development of the Niger Delta, it is important for us to investigate what people in the region themselves actually want. What are the top needs in each local government area of the Niger Delta: is it better roads, more schools, well-equipped hospitals etc? The NOI/Gallup Niger Delta Survey will help shed light on some of these needs.’

NOI Polls is a Nigeria-based opinion research organisation that works in partnership with Gallup Poll (USA) to conduct periodic scientific opinion polls in Nigeria. Gallup is based in Omaha, Nebraska, USA and is a world leader in opinion polling and research. The NOI/Gallup polls survey citizens’ views, attitudes, and perceptions on a variety of social and economic issues such as governance, market trends, management of the economy, health and welfare, and the performance of government and private sector institutions. The polls typically involve face-to-face interviews conducted across Nigeria in five languages (English, Hausa, Ibo, Pidgin English, and Yoruba).
