FAQs
Question: Some local newspapers and other media institutions periodically conduct opinion polls in Nigeria. What will distinguish NOI Poll results from other such opinion polls?
Answer:; Although other media institutions and newspapers conduct opinion polls from time to time, these polls are often unscientific and subject to various sampling biases. For example, a poll conducted via text messaging risks excluding a large proportion of the population without access to mobile phones. NOI Polls, however, is working with The Gallup Poll (USA) to ensure that a credible, scientific and comprehensive polling exercise is conducted. We will adapt international best practices and methodology on opinion polling to the Nigerian context. All this will mean more credible and in-depth information which will be of relevance to businesses and government policy-makers.

Question: Is Nigeria not already covered in other international polls conducted by other polling agencies ?
Answer: Yes, polling on Nigeria is also frequently done as part of larger polls conducted by other organizations. Yet, these exercises tend to be worldwide or regional polls in which Nigeria is included as a sample country. Such polls provide credible and important information generally on broader issues that allow cross-country and international comparisons. However, there is still a gap in tackling country-specific issues and providing in-depth analyses of local issues. By focusing on a single country (in this case, Nigeria), the NOI Poll aims to provide a more in-depth assessment of issues which will be directly relevant to local businesses and government agencies

Question: In which other African countries is domestic opinion polling currently conducted?
Answer: At present only Kenya and South Africa have domestic opinion polling institutions. NOI Poll aims at supporting the development of opinion polling first in Nigeria, and subsequently in other African countries particularly in the West African sub-region.

Question: Who will design survey questions for NOI Poll?
Answer: Staff of NOI Polls and Gallup will have the primary responsibility of designing survey questions used in NOI Polls. However, besides the standard questions which are asked by NOI Poll, businesses as well as civil society institutions who are members of the NOI Club will have the opportunity to contribute to questions which are presented in the NOI Poll.

Question: What are the potential benefits of Club Membership to participating businesses?
Answer: By participating in the NOI Polls Club, businesses will obtain proprietary access to polling results and also participate in special seminars organized by NOI Polls and Gallup. Such information provided will be additional to standard survey results which are disseminated to the general public. We are confident that information emanating from the NOI and Gallup polls will provide businesses with important contextual information about the environment in which they operate and enable them to enhance their business planning and implementation.

Question:   Why does NOI-Polls use 2000 as the sample size for its polls?
Answer: In other countries a sample size of 1000 is considered to be statistically significant. However NOI-Polls over samples to allow for interregional comparisons’
